New AI supercomputer will help create the largest-ever 3D map of the universe

The newest big-name supercomputer might help solve some of astrophysics' most important questions. VentureBeat reports the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center has officially dedicated Perlmutter, billed as one of the fastest supercomputers for AI, and it will start by helping to build the largest-ever 3D map of the visible universe to study the dark energy accelerating the cosmos' expansion.

The machine will process data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument to guide observations. Perlmutter will process "dozens" of galaxy exposures from a given night's study to dictate where DESI aims next.

As AMD notes, the initial version of Perlmutter includes 1,536 nodes that each have a 64-core Epyc 7763 processor and four NVIDIA A100 GPUs. The result is a system with almost four exaflops of performance (plus 35 petabytes of storage) when handling AI tasks, and dramatically reduced calculation times. Perlmutter could process a year's worth of DESI info in a "few days" instead of weeks or months, NVIDIA claimed.

A second phase due later in 2021 will add 3,072 CPU-only nodes that each have dual Epyc 7763 chips.

The map isn't the only project on deck. Perlmutter will also study atomic interactions to foster clean energy tech like biofuels, for example. The universe map is ambitious, though, and helps illustrate just how far supercomputers have come in tackling truly large-scale work.

Don't risk your safety, leave finding stolen iPhones and iPads to the police

Don't risk your safety, leave finding stolen iPhones and iPads to the police

Don't risk your safety, leave finding stolen iPhones and iPads to the police

Find my iPhone, a technology that allows you to track down your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Mac to the last place it was connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network, has unsurprisingly lead to incidents of "hero complex" over the years. That's when an every day person, not affiliated with law-enforcement, decides to take crime intervention into their own hands, track down the perpetrator, and make them pay. And, tragically, sometimes that's the last thing they ever get to do. Numerous recent incidents have been collected by the New York Times, which also offers this quote from San Francisco DA George Gascón:
Some have been successful. Others have gotten hurt.
That's the most important part of the entire article. A phone is just a phone. If yours is ever stolen you might be out some money, maybe some pictures — remember to back up! — but if you chase after a criminal and create a secondary crime scene you could lose a lot more, including your life.
Phones can be replaced. People can't.
Chasing after an iPhone thief is no different than chasing after a mugger. You just don't know what kind of a situation you'll end up in. We, none of us, are the Batman. We won't always win. Justice and karma won't always come out in our favor. And even if we do, we could go to jail for our own actions.
Use Find my iPhone to track down your device if you lost it in your house or left it at a restaurant or anything else dumb like that. Leave law enforcement to the people who are trained, equipped, and backed up enough to do it properly.

5 Can't-Miss Apps: LiveLens and More

Tagg-ly_

Tagg.ly

Tagg.ly cofounder and Vice journalist Tim Pool is known for using mobile tools in his reporting, so it's appropriate that his app would help ensure photographers always have their work correctly attributed. The app allows users to quickly add customized watermarks that include name, date, location, logo and timestamp to photos they shoot. The identifying info can be added automatically, when photos are taken within the app, or added to photos uploaded from your device’s camera roll. Tagg.ly is available for iOS.

With all the news that came out of Facebook's first F8 conference in three years and Snapchat's recent major overhaul, you may have overlooked some of this week's best new apps.
Luckily, Mashable creates a roundup each weekend of our favorite new and updated apps, so you won't miss out.
This week's list includes an app for watermarking photos easily, a messaging app just for couples and Threadless' new app for creating T-shirts.

Hulu's app for iOS now controls Hulu on your Xbox One and PlayStation

Hulu Plus for iPad Mini
Building on its Chromecast remote control support, Hulu Plus will now let you control video playback on your Xbox One, PS3 or PS4 from your iOS device. Once your Hulu Plus app is updated on your console of choice, you'll notice that it will show up under the "cast" button menu just like a Chromecast, giving you more choices to watch your Hulu Plus content on the big screen.
Once casting to your console, the Hulu Plus app on your phone or tablet will continue to work for playback controls and browsing for the next episode to watch. It doesn't look as though you'll need an update to the Hulu Plus mobile app itself either, so you can get right to watching as soon as the console side is updated.

Dirt Resistant paint by Nissan

Nissan Develops Dirt-Resistant Paint (W/Video)

By |   |
Nissan has developed what it says is the world's first self-cleaning car. A bit of a misnomer if there ever was one, Nissan's new "self-cleaning" Versa Note is equipped with what the automaker calls "Ultra-Ever Dry," an aftermarket coating that resists water and dirt, much in the same way Rain-X does.
More on Motortrend.com:
Designed for those who find washing their cars or going to the car wash a chore, Ultra-Ever Dry is a new coating that creates a hydrophobic (water-resistant) and oleophobic (oil-resistant) layer between the car's paint and the surrounding environment. The Ultra-Ever Dry coating repels water, dirt, and road grime by essentially beading it, allowing gravity to whisk the debris off the car. The automaker says the coating has shown promise on a new Nissan Versa Note hatchback, competently repelling rain, frost, sleet and standing water. Nissan plans on continuing to test the new coating in a variety of conditions across Europe.
More on Automobilemag.com:
Though Nissan likely won't be offering Ultra-Ever Dry on its cars from the factory, buyers can expect the dirt-resistant wrap to become available at Nissan dealers -- should the technology continue to show promise in its European testing. If it does well, Nissan buyers can prepare themselves for the hard-sell on undercoat and Ultra-Ever Dry.Source: Nissan
